Newcomer’s Information

St. Stephen’s is a church that welcomes all people, wherever they are in their spiritual journey. We invite all newcomers to travel with us and to become involved as active members of our church community.

“The Strangers who sojourn with you shall be to you as the natives among you, and you shall love them as yourself.”      Leviticus 19:34

What to Expect When You Visit

newcomers-pg-1

St. Stephen’s is a warm and welcoming Episcopal Church. Greeters welcome everyone each Sunday morning. They will be happy to answer your questions and assist you in finding our programs like nursery, toddler room or children’s chapel.

The ushers will hand you a service bulletin which will guide you through the service. It may be comprehensive, including everything said or sung during the service or it may be an outline of the service referring you to the page numbers in the service books you will find at your seat.

Our services are participatory. One of the ways Episcopalians participate in the services is to change positions (sit, kneel or stand) at various times in worship. You may also ask an usher to seat you beside a member of the congregation who would be happy to help you follow the service.

All are welcomed to join us for Communion. You will be guided to the rail surrounding the altar. You may kneel or stand. You may choose to receive the Bread and Wine made Holy or you may simply cross your arms for a blessing. You may drink from the chalice or choose to have the Holy Bread dipped in the chalice. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.

Newcomers Orientation

This informative program is offered three or four times each year as needed. Classes are scheduled on four consecutive Sundays at 9 a.m. Newcomers will learn about the other classmates in the program, view a “Welcome to the Episcopal Church” video, learn about The Eucharist and our Book of Common Prayer, find out about ministries available at St. Stephen’s, and take a get-acquainted tour of the campus
